The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) has issued a stern warning to the Edo State and Federal Governments over the recent killing of 16 northern travelers in Uromi, Edo State.
In a statement released by NEF’s spokesperson, Professor Abubakar Jiddere, the group condemned the attack, calling it “reckless and unacceptable.” They have given authorities a 14-day ultimatum to meet their demands or face unspecified consequences.
NEF’s Key Demands:
- Public Arrest and Trial: The forum insists that all those responsible for the killings must be arrested and tried publicly to ensure transparency.
- Public Apology: NEF demands an official apology from the Edo State Government and the people of Uromi, along with a commitment to prevent such attacks in the future.
- Compensation for Victims’ Families: The families of those killed must be compensated in accordance with prescribed standards.
Mounting Tensions and Government Response
NEF warned that the North “will no longer tolerate such recklessness” and accused some parts of Southern Nigeria of repeated attacks on northern citizens. The statement has fueled nationwide reactions, with concerns over rising regional tensions.
In response, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu condemned the killings and ordered security agencies to track down the perpetrators. He reaffirmed that all Nigerians have the right to move freely without fear of violence.
Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo also described the incident as “barbaric and unacceptable” and promised swift justice. Meanwhile, the Edo State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of 14 suspects linked to the attack, with investigations ongoing.
With NEF’s ultimatum in place, all eyes are on the Edo State and Federal Governments to see how they will respond within the next two weeks.
