North Korea on Monday launched a strong diplomatic attack on the United States, denouncing what it described as “shameless” actions that it said are undermining the United Nations and international law.
In a statement issued by Pyongyang’s mission to the United Nations in New York and carried by the state‑run Korean Central News Agency, North Korea accused Washington of committing a “hideous criminal act” and making a mockery of the UN arena for unilateral geopolitical interests.
Pyongyang Rejects Criticism of Its Sanctions Record
The North Korean mission’s statement was partly a reaction to reported plans for a United Nations briefing on its alleged violations of UN sanctions. Instead of addressing those allegations, Pyongyang said the focus should be on what it called the most important pending issue, the United States’ conduct.
“The United States despises the existence of the United Nations itself,” the statement said, accusing Washington of “shameless illegal and immoral acts” and of abusing the UN system to promote “unilateral and selfish purposes.”
U.S. Capture of Venezuelan Leader
The statement comes just over a week after U.S. forces carried out a military operation in Venezuela that captured President Nicolás Maduro and flew him to the United States, where he faces charges including narcotics and weapons offenses.
That surprising operation, condemned by many countries as a violation of Venezuela’s sovereignty has drawn international scrutiny and fuelled criticism from nations opposed to U.S. interventionism.
North Korea’s leadership has viewed the capture of Maduro as a warning example of what it calls a so‑called “decapitation strike” an action it fears could one day be used against Pyongyang itself.
Broader Diplomatic Friction Over United Nations Role
Pyongyang’s rebuke follows a period of growing tension between the United States and the United Nations system. In recent days, President Donald Trump announced that the U.S. would withdraw from several United Nations organisations it deems contrary to American interests a move that North Korea cited in its criticism.
North Korea remains under multiple United Nations Security Council sanctions over its nuclear and ballistic missile programmes, and disputes over those measures have long been a source of friction between Pyongyang and the United States.
Global Reactions and Implications
The U.S. military operation in Venezuela and North Korea’s rebuke at the UN are part of a broader wave of international responses to Washington’s actions. At a separate UN Security Council meeting earlier in the week, countries including China, Russia, Brazil and Colombia condemned the U.S. operation as a violation of international law and Venezuelan sovereignty.
The controversy has heightened diplomatic tensions and raised questions about the future role of international law and the United Nations in addressing unilateral military actions by major powers.
