Georgia names Kanu honorary citizen
Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has been granted honorary citizenship of the State of Georgia in the United States.
Kanu, who is currently serving a life sentence at the Sokoto Prison after being convicted on terrorism charges by the Nigerian government, was named an “Honorary Georgia Citizen” in a proclamation issued on January 16, 2026.

The proclamation was signed by Georgia’s Secretary of State, Brad Raffensperger, who also declared Kanu a Goodwill Ambassador from the state.
The document stated that Kanu should be accorded every courtesy as a goodwill ambassador in his travels within the United States and beyond.
Proclamation received on Kanu’s behalf
A former Nigerian ambassador to South Africa, Uche Ajulu, received the proclamation on behalf of Kanu from Raffensperger in Georgia on Friday.
The proclamation was issued at the Georgia State Capitol in Atlanta and formally affixed with the seal of the secretary of state’s office.
