President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero, has declared that the union’s current agitation is not just about economic grievances like wages and subsidies, but a deeper fight “for the soul of Nigeria.”
Ajaero made this assertion during a press briefing on Friday, May 9, 2025, in response to growing speculation that the NLC’s frequent strikes and protests are driven solely by financial motives.
“Our struggle is not just about bread and butter. It is about restoring dignity, justice, and governance in a nation that is losing its direction,” Ajaero said. “We are fighting for the soul of Nigeria.”
This declaration comes at a tense moment in Nigeria’s socio-political landscape. Citizens are grappling with record-high inflation, rising fuel costs, and a sharp increase in electricity tariffs all under a government still battling to stabilize the economy post-subsidy removal.
The NLC has been at the forefront of opposition to the federal government’s recent policies, especially the hike in electricity tariffs and fuel prices. The union has also criticized the government’s failure to implement a new minimum wage, despite repeated negotiations.

“This is beyond organized labour. It is about every Nigerian who wakes up to no light, no food, and no hope,” he added.

The NLC has already issued ultimatums to the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and warned of a nationwide protest if recent tariff hikes are not reversed within days.
