The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has shut down offices of Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) across Abuja, Kogi State, Nasarawa State, and Niger State following the disengagement of more than 900 workers.
Operations were halted on Wednesday morning as AEDC offices, including its headquarters in Abuja, were locked, disrupting activities across the Federal Capital Territory and neighbouring states.
The development comes a day after the NLC, led by its president, Joe Ajaero, picketed the company’s headquarters in protest against the controversial job cuts.
Ajaero said the crisis began about six months ago when AEDC management indicated that only workers who had reached or were close to retirement would be affected, a position he said was later contradicted.
He noted that many of those disengaged were not near retirement, with some having spent just two to three years in service, describing the situation as deceptive.
The labour leader warned that continued failure to resolve the dispute could trigger a wider industrial action, potentially disrupting electricity supply in the affected areas.
The NLC had earlier issued a 48-hour ultimatum to AEDC management to address the issue or face escalated action that could cripple power distribution.
