A Nigerian nurse identified as Ella has revealed that she stopped attending the Catholic Church after an incident she described as humiliating and emotionally distressing during a 7 a.m. Mass.
In a Facebook post that has since gone viral, Ella said she attended the early morning service while battling depression and seeking comfort in prayer, but was confronted over her clothing by church officials.
What happened at the church
According to her account, Ella said she wore a long, non-revealing maxi gown to Mass. Shortly after she arrived, some elderly women reportedly approached her and complained that her outfit was “too tight.”
She said she ignored them and moved to sit in the front row, where she began praying while in tears.
Ella alleged that an elderly woman who served as a church warden later signalled her to stand up and informed her that she could not sit there because of the way she was dressed.
Aftermath and decision to leave
The nurse said the incident left her embarrassed and emotionally broken, prompting her to walk out of the church.
“At that moment, I didn’t feel like a sinner seeking God anymore. I felt like an offender in God’s house,” she wrote in the post.
Ella stated that while she left the church that day, she did not abandon her faith in God. She said her decision was based on what she described as a lack of compassion shown to her in that moment.
Clarification on the outfit
Alongside her post, Ella shared photos of the gown she wore and explained that she had covered her chest with a long scarf and also covered her head.
She said the issue raised by the church officials was that the dress showed her curves, and she was told to wear flowing gowns when coming to church.
