In a significant anti-smuggling breakthrough, the Nigerian Navy has intercepted 1,306 bags of foreign parboiled rice in the Majidun area of Ikorodu West LGA, Lagos State. The operation was part of routine maritime patrols under Operation AWATSE, targeting illicit trade routes in the region.
The seizure was led by Commodore Paul Nimmyel, Commander of the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) BEECROFT and Maritime Component Commander for South-West Operation AWATSE.
Speaking during a press briefing at the NNS BEECROFT base, Commodore Nimmyel confirmed that the interception occurred on Saturday, April 12, 2025, following suspicious movements by vehicles attempting to evade a naval checkpoint.
“This prompted a swift pursuit by the Operation AWATSE Quick Response Team (QRT), in line with the Joint Task Force’s Standard Operating Procedures,” he stated.
The Navy’s QRT team reportedly carried out the interception with “commendable professionalism and restraint,” and no casualties were recorded during the operation.
Rice Handed Over to Customs
The confiscated bags of rice were formally handed over to the Nigeria Customs Service, Western Marine Command, Apapa, in compliance with the Harmonized Standard Procedures on Arrest, Detention, and Prosecution.
Commodore Nimmyel emphasized that the Navy remains committed to combating smuggling and supporting the government’s stance against economic sabotage.
“The successful interception of this large consignment reaffirms our unwavering commitment to protecting Nigeria’s economic interests and ensuring maritime security,” he added.
