A Nigerian delegate at the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) meeting, Kafilat Ogbara, has called on the National Assembly to conduct a transparent and impartial investigation into sexual harassment allegations against Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
Ogbara, who chairs the House Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development, also emphasized the need to protect human rights and ensure that all individuals involved in the case are safeguarded from any form of intimidation or retaliation.
Speaking at a press briefing at the United Nations headquarters in New York on Wednesday, she outlined key demands for the investigation.
“I called for the following actions: a thorough and unbiased investigation; ensuring that all claims and defenses are examined fairly and transparently; protection of all parties involved; safeguarding the rights of all individuals; and preventing any form of intimidation or retaliation, accountability, and transparency,” she stated.
Her remarks came in response to concerns raised by Kogi Central Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan during the IPU meeting on Tuesday. Akpoti-Uduaghan, during the session, reported her six-month suspension from the Senate, bringing attention to issues of fairness and justice in Nigeria’s legislative processes.
