First Lady Oluremi Tinubu has weighed in on the ongoing controversy in the Senate, emphasizing that the chamber should be a place of integrity and respect, rather than conflict.
Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has spoken out regarding the ongoing controversy in the Senate, emphasizing that the chamber should be a place of dignity and not discord.
Her remarks were in response to sexual harassment allegations made by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan (Kogi Central) against Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter) by her spokesperson, Bukola Kukoyi, on Thursday, Tinubu highlighted the need to maintain the Senate’s integrity.
“I understand that people may wonder why I haven’t taken a stance on the situation in the Senate,” she said. “However, I trust that the Senate is handling the matter appropriately. The chamber is meant to be a distinguished institution, and such controversies should not arise. It deserves the utmost respect.”
Reflecting on her time in the Senate, Tinubu recalled serving for 12 years and noted that being part of the legislative body is an honor.
As International Women’s Day approaches, she encouraged Nigerian women to be assertive in leadership roles and not allow themselves to be sidelined.
“Women, uplift yourselves. Don’t put yourself in a position where men can talk down to you. You can shut them down before they even begin,” she advised.
She also acknowledged the strides women have made over the years, citing peace advocate Zuriel Oduwole as an inspiration. Additionally, the First Lady praised Nigerian youth for their potential and urged women to continue striving for excellence.
