Two Nigerian brothers, Samuel Ogoshi (24) and Samson Ogoshi (21), have been sentenced to 17.5 years in a U.S. federal prison for a devastating sextortion scheme that led to the suicide of 17-year-old Jordan DeMay in Michigan. This case marks the first successful prosecution of Nigerian nationals for sextortion in the United States.
According to court records, the brothers operated from Lagos, Nigeria, pretending to be a teenage girl on Instagram. They lured DeMay into sharing explicit images, then demanded $1,000 in exchange for not releasing them. After he sent $300, they increased the pressure, prompting the teen to express suicidal thoughts.
Their cruel response: “Good… Do that fast, or I’ll make you do it.”
DeMay tragically died by suicide less than six hours after the extortion began, on March 25, 2022.
The brothers were extradited to the U.S. in 2023 and pleaded guilty in April 2024. At their sentencing, the judge condemned their lack of remorse and noted they continued targeting victims even after DeMay’s death.
In a related case, another Nigerian national, Hassanbunhussein Abolore Lawal, was extradited to the U.S. earlier this year. He faces charges for a similar sextortion scheme linked to the suicide of 17-year-old Gavin Guffey in South Carolina.
U.S. and Nigerian authorities have ramped up efforts to combat online sextortion, especially as cases involving teenage boys rise globally.
