COAS Does Not Operate Any Social Media Accounts
The Nigerian Army has issued a warning to the public regarding fake social media accounts allegedly operated by or linked to the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu.
In a statement released on Friday via the Army’s official X handle, the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Appolonia Anele, said the Army has observed a disturbing rise in fraudulent online activities by individuals creating fake accounts in the name of the COAS.
The statement emphasized that Lt Gen Waidi Shaibu does not operate or maintain any official social media account on any platform. The Army warned that any account claiming affiliation with the COAS is fake and should be disregarded.
Fraud and Misinformation Risk
The Army further cautioned that these fake accounts are often used to defraud unsuspecting members of the public, solicit funds, or spread misinformation under the guise of the Nigerian Army.
“Members of the public are advised to exercise caution and remain vigilant, as the fake accounts are often used to defraud unsuspecting individuals, solicit funds, or spread misinformation in the name of the Nigerian Army,” the statement said.
The public is urged not to engage with, respond to, or share content from such accounts, as doing so may expose individuals to scams and other criminal activities.
Army Takes Action Against Perpetrators
The Nigerian Army disclosed that steps are being taken to identify and apprehend those responsible for the fake accounts, with the intent to prosecute them according to the law.
The statement reassured Nigerians of the Army’s commitment to:
Protecting lives and property
Safeguarding the country’s territorial integrity
Operating in accordance with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria
