The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, has announced an increase in the daily Ration Cash Allowance (RCA) for Nigerian troops from ₦1,500 to ₦3,000, effective from the end of March.
Speaking at the 9th Brigade Parade Ground in Ikeja, Lagos, during his visit to the 81 Division, Oluyede described the previous allowance as inadequate.
“It is unacceptable that our soldiers are still receiving ₦1,500 for their daily feeding. This increment is long overdue, and I want to assure you that your welfare remains my priority,” he stated.
Affordable Housing for Retiring Soldiers
Beyond the RCA increase, Oluyede addressed the housing challenges faced by soldiers, particularly warrant officers nearing retirement. To tackle this, he announced an expansion of the Nigerian Army Housing Scheme, which aims to provide affordable homeownership options.
“Many of our senior personnel retire without owning a home. To address this, we are constructing housing units in several states, including Abuja, Ibadan, Jos, Port Harcourt, Owerri, and Akwa Ibom,” he revealed.
The scheme will offer two- and three-bedroom homes for as low as ₦8 million, making homeownership more accessible for soldiers.
“You won’t find houses at this price anywhere else in Nigeria. This is an investment in your future,” Oluyede added.
Low-Interest Loan Scheme for Soldiers
To further support troops, the COAS announced a low-interest loan scheme, allowing soldiers to access funds at just 3% interest. However, he advised caution in taking loans unnecessarily.
“If you don’t truly need it, don’t take it. While the interest rate is low, repayment can still be challenging. But the option is there if you need it,” he explained.
Free Uniform Distribution
Addressing concerns over uniform shortages, Oluyede disclosed that the Army had begun the monthly distribution of 100,000 kits, ensuring that every soldier receives proper attire.
“No soldier should have to buy a uniform with their own money. We are committed to providing all necessary kits before the year ends,” he assured.

Oluyede urged soldiers to remain dedicated to their duties, reaffirming his commitment to their welfare and operational effectiveness.
“Your service is invaluable, and we will continue to prioritize your well-being,” he said.
