Nigeria Records Major Counter-Terrorism Victory
Nigeria has achieved a landmark success in the war against terrorism with the capture of two of its most wanted terrorists — Mahmud Muhammad Usman (aka Abu Bara’a/Abbas/Mukhtar), leader of Ansaru, and Mahmud al-Nigeri (aka Mallam Mamuda), his deputy.
The announcement was made on Saturday evening by the National Security Adviser, Malam Nuhu Ribadu, who confirmed that both men were arrested in a high-risk, intelligence-led operation conducted between May and July 2025.
Who Are Abu Bara and Mallam Mamuda?
Abu Bara – Emir of Ansaru
According to Ribadu, Abu Bara is the self-styled Emir of Jama’atu Ansarul Muslimina fi-Biladis Sudan (ANSARU), Nigeria’s Al-Qaeda affiliate. He coordinated terrorist sleeper cells across the country and masterminded multiple high-profile kidnappings and armed robberies to fund terrorism.
Mallam Mamuda – Ansaru’s Deputy Commander
Mamuda, described as Abu Bara’s proclaimed Chief of Staff, led the so-called “Mahmudawa” cell based around Kainji National Park, stretching across Niger and Kwara States into Benin Republic. He trained in Libya between 2013 and 2015 under jihadist instructors from Egypt, Tunisia, and Algeria, specializing in weapons handling and IED fabrication.

Ribadu said they also maintain active links with terrorist groups in Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso, as well as Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM).
“A Decisive Blow Against Ansaru”
In his statement, Ribadu declared the arrests a historic milestone in Nigeria’s counter-terrorism fight:
“The capture of Abu Bara and Mallam Mamuda marks one of the most significant achievements to date in our effort to rid Nigeria of the threat of terrorism. This successful decapitation of Ansaru’s leadership has effectively dismantled its central command and paved the path for the group’s total annihilation.”
Ansaru: From Boko Haram Splinter to Al-Qaeda Affiliate
Formed in January 2012, Ansaru emerged as a splinter faction of Boko Haram, initially branding itself as a more “humane alternative.” However, it soon turned to targeting Nigerian security operatives, civilian communities, and government infrastructure.
The group adopted the setting sun logo of Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), signaling its alignment with global jihadist movements. Over the years, Ansaru entrenched itself in both urban sleeper cells and forest enclaves, particularly around Kainji National Park.
What This Means for Nigeria’s Security
The dismantling of Ansaru’s leadership is seen as the most decisive blow against the group since its inception, raising hopes of reducing terrorist violence in northern Nigeria. Security experts believe the arrests could disrupt links between Nigerian jihadist cells and international terrorist networks.
