Nigeria, UAE formalise maritime cooperation
Nigeria has sealed a strategic maritime partnership with Abu Dhabi Ports Group through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) focused on port infrastructure development, maritime logistics and digital solutions.
The agreement was signed on the sidelines of the recently concluded Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week, marking a new phase in Nigeria–United Arab Emirates economic relations.
Oyetola leads Nigerian delegation
The Honourable Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola CON, led the Nigerian delegation for the signing, while the Chairman of Abu Dhabi Ports Group, Mohamed Hassan, led the company’s management team.
Following the signing, the delegation briefed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, on the details and strategic importance of the agreement.
MoU concludes over 20 years of engagement
The partnership, which had been under consideration for more than two decades, forms part of broader trade and investment engagements between the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the United Arab Emirates.
Its signing signals renewed commitment by both countries to deepen cooperation in maritime development and the blue economy.
Focus on ports, logistics and digital solutions
Under the MoU, both parties will collaborate on upgrading port infrastructure, improving maritime logistics systems and deploying digital technologies to enhance efficiency across Nigeria’s maritime sector.
The agreement is expected to support Nigeria’s long-term blue economy strategy and strengthen its regional maritime competitiveness.
NIMASA joins high-level engagement
Also present at the engagement was the Director General and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dr Dayo Mobereola, underscoring the regulatory importance of the partnership.
Officials described the MoU as a foundational step toward sustained reforms and investment in Nigeria’s maritime industry.
