Eight killed in Niger State after vehicle hits roadside bomb
Eight persons lost their lives on Monday after a vehicle they were travelling in struck a roadside improvised explosive device (IED) in Niger State.
The bomb was planted by suspected terrorists, who had previously destroyed a bridge along Luma Road in Borgu LGA connecting the Luma, Babana, and Agwara communities. The bridge is a major route for residents and provides access to the Babana border market, which operates every Monday.
The vehicle, moving between Nuku and Woro, hit the IED, killing the seven passengers and the driver.
Wasiu Abiodun, spokesperson for the Niger State Police Command, confirmed the bombing and said clearance operations were ongoing. “On 23rd March 2026, it was reported that suspected terrorists used an explosive device to bomb a bridge along Luma Road. Monitoring continues while clearance operations are intensified,” he said.
Authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant while security forces secure the affected area.
