Classrooms Without Chairs, Toilets or Roofs: The Reality at LEA Kurudu
Pupils at LEA Primary School Kurudu, located opposite ECWA Church in Abuja Municipal Area Council, are enduring heartbreaking learning conditions that expose the stark failures of Nigeria’s public education system.
Established in 1975, the school is now a shadow of itself its walls are cracked, roofs blown off, and several classrooms abandoned due to unsafe conditions. Basic amenities such as desks, chairs, toilets, and teaching materials are almost non-existent.
Contradicting Government Promises
The situation directly contradicts statements made by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, who earlier claimed his administration had renovated over 60 schools in the Federal Capital Territory. Yet LEA Kurudu remains untouched, leaving both pupils and teachers exposed to the elements and forced to make do with what they can.
Children, many of them barefoot, are seen learning on bare floors in overcrowded rooms, with no doors or windows to shield them from the weather. Staff also operate without furniture or basic teaching tools.
Silence from Elected Representatives
The senator representing the FCT, Ireti Kingibe, has also come under fire for failing to advocate for investment in public education in underserved communities such as Kurudu. The continued neglect highlights a disconnect between official narratives and lived realities on the ground.
A Call for Urgent Action
“This is not just about infrastructure it’s about dignity and the future of our children,” said a community observer quoted via civic tech platform Monitng. “We call on Minister Wike and Senator Kingibe to urgently visit LEA Kurudu and take immediate steps to restore the school.”
The neglect of LEA Kurudu is emblematic of a larger crisis in Nigeria’s public education system where promises are made, but the most vulnerable continue to suffer.
“If education is truly a priority, it must reflect in the condition of our public schools. These children are not statistics they are the future of our country,” the statement concluded.
