In a significant operation, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has successfully intercepted drugs worth over ₦4.5 billion in multiple raids across Lagos, Ogun, and Abuja.
The seizures, which took place over a period of four days, included massive quantities of codeine syrup, cocaine, and tramadol, highlighting the scale of illicit drug trafficking affecting Nigeria.
Key Highlights of the Operation:
Codeine Seizure: In Lagos, NDLEA agents seized an astounding 7,500 litres of codeine syrup being smuggled through underground channels. The codeine was found hidden in several containers, pointing to a well-organized operation aimed at flooding the local market.
Cocaine Bust: NDLEA operatives also intercepted cocaine shipments passing through Abuja’s Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport. The traffickers attempted to conceal the drugs within cargo, but were apprehended after careful surveillance.
Tramadol: Alongside the other drugs, large quantities of tramadol were discovered in a warehouse in Ogun State, likely meant for local distribution.
The operation, which involved international smuggling rings, was made possible by the combined efforts of NDLEA officials and intelligence agencies, which had been monitoring the drug trafficking routes for several months.
One suspect has been arrested in connection with the trafficking and is currently in custody, with investigations ongoing. Authorities believe the haul is part of a larger transnational drug network, with connections spanning across West Africa and beyond.
NDLEA Chairman Mohammed Buba Marwa commended the officers for their dedication and vigilance in curbing the spread of illicit substances in Nigeria. He warned that the agency would continue to ramp up its operations against traffickers.
“This operation is a testament to our commitment to fighting drug abuse and trafficking. We will not rest until Nigeria is free of these dangerous substances,” Marwa stated in a press release.
The seized drugs, according to NDLEA officials, were destined for distribution across Nigeria’s major urban centers, where drug abuse has been rising in recent years, particularly among youth.
This operation underscores the growing challenge of illicit drug trafficking in Nigeria and the critical role of agencies like NDLEA in safeguarding the country’s security and public health.
