The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has taken a major step toward improving food security by launching a rice farming training program for youths in Abia State. The initiative, themed Capacity Building on Commercial Scale Rice Production and Processing, aims to equip young farmers with modern agricultural techniques to enhance rice production in the Niger Delta region.
Over 260 Youths Trained in Modern Farming Techniques
The training program attracted over 260 participants, eager to learn best practices in rice cultivation and processing. Speaking at the event, NDDC’s Managing Director and CEO, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, emphasized the importance of the initiative in promoting high-yield agriculture and ensuring long-term food security.
“This initiative is essential for promoting high-yield agriculture and ensuring sustainable food security,” Ogbuku stated.
Dr. Winifred Madume, the Deputy Director of NDDC, represented by Mr. Wale Oretan, disclosed that over 300 youths have already benefited from the training since its inception.
Providing Seeds and Skills for Sustainable Agriculture
To support participants in their journey, the NDDC provided high-quality rice seeds and training on improved farming techniques. The goal is not only to increase rice production but also to ensure that knowledge gained is shared with other farmers across the region.
The program aligns with the federal government’s push for agricultural development as a means to create jobs and reduce Nigeria’s dependence on food imports.
With initiatives like this, the Niger Delta region could become a major contributor to Nigeria’s food production, fostering both economic growth and food security.
