National Assembly Responds to Public Outcry Over Tax Reforms
Nigeria’s National Assembly has ordered an urgent review of the recently passed tax reform laws following widespread public backlash over their implementation and potential economic impact.
Lawmakers said the review would address concerns raised by businesses, labour groups, civil society organisations, and members of the public who argue that some provisions of the new tax framework could worsen the cost-of-living crisis and place additional pressure on households and small businesses.

The directive was issued after heated debates in both chambers, with legislators acknowledging gaps in communication, clarity, and stakeholder engagement surrounding the reforms.
Lawmakers Order Immediate Review and Gazetting
According to parliamentary sources, the leadership of the National Assembly has mandated relevant committees to work with the Federal Ministry of Finance, the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), and other agencies to review contentious sections of the tax laws.
The lawmakers also ordered the proper gazetting of the reviewed provisions to ensure legal clarity and uniform enforcement across the country.
Some legislators stressed that while tax reforms are necessary to expand Nigeria’s revenue base, implementation must be sensitive to current economic realities, including inflation, unemployment, and declining purchasing power.
Concerns Over Economic Impact and Implementation
Public criticism of the tax laws has focused largely on fears that the reforms could lead to higher prices for goods and services, increased compliance burdens for small businesses, and confusion over overlapping tax responsibilities between federal and subnational governments.
Several business associations and labour unions have called for a temporary pause in enforcement, urging the government to prioritise consultation and transparency before full implementation.
National Assembly Says Engagement Will Continue
In response to the backlash, lawmakers assured Nigerians that further stakeholder engagement would be carried out before final decisions are taken.
They emphasised that the review process is aimed at strengthening the tax system, boosting government revenue, and ensuring fairness without stifling economic growth.
The National Assembly said updates from the review process would be communicated publicly once recommendations are finalised.
Why This Matters
Nigeria is under pressure to increase non-oil revenue, but tax reforms remain politically sensitive amid rising living costs and economic uncertainty. How the government balances revenue generation with public trust may shape fiscal policy debates heading into 2027.
