The National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), USA chapter, has called on President Bola Tinubu to remove the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, arguing that his continued presence in government is fuelling the prolonged political crisis in Rivers State. The group also urged the president to declare a six-month state of emergency in parts of Northern Nigeria grappling with insurgency and banditry ahead of the 2027 general elections.
NADECO Blames Wike for Rivers Political Crisis
Speaking on behalf of the organisation, NADECO USA President and Chief Executive Officer, Lloyd Ukwu, accused Wike of playing a central role in the political instability in Rivers State. Ukwu argued that peace would remain unattainable unless decisive action is taken against the former Rivers governor.
According to him, removing Wike from office would send a strong signal that President Tinubu does not condone what the group described as the minister’s overbearing influence in Rivers State politics.
“The main problem in Rivers State today, as far as this crisis is concerned, is the Minister of the FCT. Rivers people know where the problem lies,” Ukwu said.
‘Wike Is Tinubu’s Employee’ — NADECO
Ukwu stressed that President Tinubu has both the authority and responsibility to rein in the minister, insisting that Wike’s current role gives him undue leverage in the state’s affairs.
“The President must call him to order. Wike is his employee,” he added.
The group maintained that sanctioning Wike would help restore political stability and rebuild public confidence in the federal government’s neutrality in Rivers State.
Call for State of Emergency in Terror-Affected Northern Areas
Beyond Rivers State, NADECO USA also raised concerns about the deteriorating security situation in parts of Northern Nigeria, where insurgency and banditry continue to disrupt daily life.
The coalition urged President Tinubu to declare a six-month state of emergency in affected areas, warning that credible elections cannot be conducted in territories under terrorist control ahead of the 2027 polls.
Concerns Ahead of the 2027 Elections
NADECO cautioned that allowing elections to take place in insecure regions would undermine the integrity of the democratic process and disenfranchise voters.
The group argued that restoring security must take priority to ensure free, fair and credible elections nationwide.
