Fresh Revelations Emerge in Killing of Former NAOS President
More details have continued to surface following the assassination of Mr. Igwe Akuma Akwu, the former President-General of the National Association of Ohafia Students (NAOS), who was killed on Friday, January 2, 2026, in Ohafia Local Government Area of Abia State.
Akwu, a youth leader and indigene of Ndi Uma compound of Okon-Aku, was reportedly shot dead by unknown gunmen, an incident that triggered widespread anger and the destruction of property within the community.
Police Deploy Tactical Teams, Arrest Suspects
Following the incident, the Abia State Police Command confirmed that some suspects had been arrested in connection with the killing.

According to the police, two tactical teams were deployed to Ohafia to restore calm and prevent further breakdown of law and order as tensions escalated after the assassination.
Late Akwu Had Raised Alarm Before His Death
However, emerging records from social media posts made by the late Akwu on December 30, 2025, just three days before his death, suggest that he had publicly warned government authorities and security agencies that his life and those of members of his community were under serious threat.
Claims of Assault and Intimidation
In the post, Akwu alleged that he was brutally assaulted in January 2025 by individuals he described as thugs acting on behalf of a powerful figure.
He further claimed that his Toyota Corolla vehicle was set ablaze on October 28, 2025, accusing the perpetrators of boasting about having strong government connections and influence.
Missing Child and Final Warning
Akwu also disclosed that during one of the attacks, his five-year-old cousin went missing, raising additional concerns about escalating violence.
He concluded the post by warning that his life could be in danger, especially due to the public nature of the allegations he had made.
Calls for Calm and Thorough Investigation
In the aftermath of the killing, human rights organizations, traditional institutions, and youth groups across Abia State have appealed for calm while urging authorities to conduct a thorough, transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding Akwu’s death.

Human Rights Group Issues Strong Statement
In a strongly worded statement released on Sunday, Nelson Nnanna Nwafor, Executive Director of the Foundation for Environmental Rights Advocacy & Development (FENRAD), demanded the immediate arrest and prosecution of all individuals involved in the killing.
“We call for a review of the security response mechanism to reported threats and early warning signals to prevent the recurrence of similar tragedies,” Nwafor stated.
He also demanded clear accountability for any lapses or negligence that may have contributed to the failure to protect the late youth leader despite his prior warnings.
