A devastating fire swept through Ladipo Market in Mushin and Owode Onirin Market along Ikorodu Road, Lagos, in the early hours of Monday, reducing goods worth millions of naira to ashes.
Eyewitnesses reported that the blaze at Ladipo Market started around 1 a.m., rapidly spreading through numerous shops and warehouses stocked with vehicle spare parts, mechanical tools, motorcycles, and household electrical appliances.
The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, which battled the flames until 6 a.m., confirmed that no casualties were recorded. Emergency teams from Isolo, Bolade, and Alausa Fire Stations worked tirelessly to contain the fire despite challenges in accessing some affected areas. Their efforts prevented the blaze from spreading to nearby properties.
Meanwhile, another fire broke out at Owode Onirin Market along Ikorodu Road, affecting several shops selling metallic materials. Firefighters from Alausa and Ikorodu Fire Stations responded swiftly, successfully bringing the situation under control by 5 a.m.
Margaret Adeseye, Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, assured the public that investigations into the causes of both fires would commence once damping-down operations were completed.
“Thankfully, no casualties were recorded in either incident. The causes of the fires will be determined once firefighting operations move to the next phase,” she stated.
