Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has officially launched its first standalone AI assistant app, marking a major move to compete with OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini.
Unveiled during Meta’s LlamaCon developer event, the new Meta AI app is powered by the company’s latest large language model, Llama 4, and is now available to users via web and mobile platforms, including a direct integration with Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg introduced the app in a video on Instagram, describing it as “your personal AI” that can learn and adapt based on users’ activity across Meta-owned platforms like Facebook and Instagram.
“A billion people are using Meta AI across our apps now, so we made a new standalone Meta AI app for you to check out,” Zuckerberg said.
Key Features of the Meta AI App
Voice-First Interaction: Designed around natural voice conversations, the app uses full-duplex speech to simulate phone call-like exchanges, including laughter and interruptions.
Personalization: Users can allow the app to learn from their social activity, remembering names, birthdays, and preferences.
Discover Feed: A new social feed lets users view, share, and get inspired by AI-generated prompts, artwork, and content from others.
Web & Desktop Access: Available on mobile (iOS and Android) and desktop via meta.ai, ensuring cross-device functionality.
Smart Glasses Integration: Replaces Meta View as the companion app for Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses, allowing seamless transitions between glasses, app, and desktop.
Image Generation: Users can create and edit visuals using text or voice prompts directly from the app.
Meta Chief Product Officer Chris Cox added that the company aimed to make the AI “the most natural possible interface,” beginning with voice-first interactions and evolving with user consent.
Despite its ambitious rollout, Meta notes that the AI app currently cannot browse the web in real-time for certain queries — a feature still dominated by ChatGPT and Gemini.
With the release of this app, Meta is betting on its social media ecosystem and open-source AI strategy to build a new generation of AI assistants that are deeply personal, highly social, and easily accessible.
