Mark Carney Sworn In as Canada’s 24th Prime Minister Amid U.S. Trade Tensions

Mark Carney, a distinguished economist and former central banker, was officially sworn in as Canada’s 24th Prime Minister on Friday, March 14, 2025.

The ceremony took place at Rideau Hall in Ottawa, presided over by Governor General Mary Simon, the representative of King Charles, Canada’s head of state.

At 59, Carney brings a wealth of financial expertise to his new role. He previously served as the Governor of the Bank of Canada during the 2008 global financial crisis, implementing measures that helped Canada navigate the downturn effectively. He later became the first non-Briton to govern the Bank of England, leading it from 2013 to 2020.

Carney’s appointment comes amid escalating tensions with the United States, particularly concerning trade relations. President Donald Trump has imposed significant tariffs on Canadian exports, including a 25% tariff on steel and aluminum and a 10% tariff on crude oil, actions that threaten to push Canada into a recession.

In his inaugural address, Carney emphasized Canada’s sovereignty and distinct identity, firmly rejecting any notion of integration with the U.S. This stance was in direct response to President Trump’s suggestions that Canada could become the 51st state of the U.S., a notion Carney dismissed as “crazy.”

To address these challenges, Carney has assembled a streamlined cabinet focused on economic resilience and national security. Key appointments include François-Philippe Champagne as Finance Minister, Chrystia Freeland as Minister of Transport and Internal Trade, and Dominic LeBlanc as Minister of International Trade. Mélanie Joly continues as Foreign Minister, and Bill Blair remains as Defense Minister.

Carney’s administration aims to diversify Canada’s trade partnerships beyond the U.S., seeking stronger economic ties with Europe and Asia. Domestically, he plans to address housing affordability and revise environmental policies by eliminating the consumer carbon price in favor of targeting corporate polluters.

With a general election mandated by October 20, Carney’s leadership will be pivotal in navigating Canada through these complex economic and political landscapes. His commitment to safeguarding Canada’s sovereignty and economic stability marks a new chapter in the nation’s governance.
