Malaysia Cuts Out Recruitment Agents: What Nigerians Need to Know

The Malaysian government is set to introduce a digital platform allowing employers to hire foreign workers directly, eliminating private recruitment agents that have long dominated the process.

Human Resources Minister Datuk Ramakrishnan said the move aims to reduce recruitment costs, curb worker exploitation, and improve transparency in the foreign labour system. “The issue has been raised repeatedly in Parliament and highlighted in the media. We want to eliminate the middleman problem,” he said.

Many foreign workers, including Nigerians, have faced inflated recruitment fees and debt before arriving in Malaysia. Some are assigned jobs that differ from what was promised. The new platform will allow employers and workers to agree on job roles, wages, and employment terms before contracts are finalised, helping prevent misrepresentation and exploitation.

Nigerians make up a significant portion of Malaysia’s foreign workforce. The reform is expected to make it easier and safer for them to secure employment directly with employers, without relying on recruitment agents.

Officials say the digital platform will streamline hiring, lower costs, and strengthen oversight of foreign worker employment, marking a major shift in Malaysia’s labour system.
