The Chief Medical Director (CMD) of Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Idi-Araba, Dr. Wasiu Adeyemo, has announced that the pupils of King’s College Annex, Lagos, who were admitted with diphtheria, will soon be discharged.
Speaking to reporters in Lagos yesterday, Adeyemo confirmed that the pupils, who were brought to the hospital last Saturday, are now medically fit for discharge. However, he noted that they remain under observation as a precautionary measure to ensure their full recovery.
The diphtheria outbreak at King’s College Annex recently led to the death of one pupil, while others were hospitalized for treatment. Reports of the outbreak first emerged between November and December 2024.
Diphtheria is a highly contagious bacterial infection caused by Corynebacterium diphtheriae, which spreads through direct contact with an infected person.
Adeyemo assured that while the affected pupils have recovered, LUTH is keeping them under further medical supervision to ensure their health is fully stabilized before they are discharged.
