Libyan Driver Caught Smuggling Nigerians at Ashkada-Sabha Triangle Gate
A Libyan national has been arrested while attempting to smuggle four undocumented Nigerian women and three children through the Ashkada-Sabha Triangle Gate in southern Libya.
The arrest occurred during a routine checkpoint inspection by Libyan police officers who discovered the group inside a vehicle headed north.
Suspect Identified and Bribe Attempt Reported
Authorities identified the suspect as Y.A.M.Y., a Libyan man born in 1993. According to official reports, the driver attempted to offer a bribe to the police officers at the checkpoint in a bid to avoid arrest.
However, the officers rejected the offer and proceeded with the arrest, underscoring Libya’s increasing efforts to clamp down on cross-border smuggling and human trafficking.
Migrants and Suspect Transferred for Investigation
All seven individuals the four Nigerian women and three children have been transferred to the Al-Shatti Security Directorate, pending further investigation and referral to the appropriate judicial authorities.
Migrant Rescue Watch Confirms Incident
The incident was confirmed by Migrant Rescue Watch, which released a statement on Monday highlighting the arrest.
“Police during inspection at the Ashkada-Sabha Triangle Gate thwarted an attempted human smuggling and arrested a Libyan driver (‘Y. A. M. Y.’, born in 1993) who transported four undocumented migrant females and three children of Nigerian nationality,” the statement read.
“During inspection, the driver offered a bribe to police officers in an attempt to evade accountability. All transferred to Al-Shatti Security Directorate pending referral to competent judicial authorities.”
