Chief (Dr.) Sen. Edwin Kiagbodo Clark, a former Federal Commissioner for Information and a revered South-South leader, has passed away at the age of 97.
A family statement released by the Clark-Fuludu Bekederemo family of Kiagbodo Town in Delta State announced his passing on Monday, February 17, 2025. Clark, who also served as the chairman of the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), left behind a legacy of distinguished service to Nigeria.
Born in Kiagbodo in the Ijaw region of what is now Delta State, Clark began his education in Effurun, Okrika, and Afugbene. He furthered his studies at the Government Teacher Training College—now known as Delta State University, Abraka—before embarking on a brief career as a school teacher. His pursuit of higher education led him overseas, where he earned a law degree.
Throughout his illustrious career, Clark made significant contributions to Nigeria’s governance. He served under the administrations of military governor Samuel Ogbemudia and Head of State General Yakubu Gowon between 1966 and 1975. In 1966, he was appointed to an advisory committee for the military governor of the Mid-Western Region, David Ejoor, and later assumed the role of Federal Commissioner of Information in 1975.
The family expressed their heartfelt sorrow, stating:
“The Clark-Fuludu Bekederemo family of Kiagbodo Town, Delta State, wishes to announce the passing of Chief (Dr.) Sen. Edwin Kiagbodo Clark OFR, CON on Monday 17th February, 2025. May his soul rest in peace, Amen.”
Chief Edwin Clark’s dedication to public service and his pioneering contributions to Nigeria’s political and informational landscape will be remembered by many.
