Lagos Launches E-Numbering System to Curb Tax Evasion
The Lagos State Government has announced plans to commence electronic numbering of houses across the state, a move aimed at enhancing tax administration and curbing widespread tax evasion.
The initiative, spearheaded by the Ministry of Finance, will involve digitally tagging residential and commercial properties with unique identification numbers. According to the government, this system will enable accurate tracking of taxable properties, ensure accountability, and enhance urban planning.
Commissioner for Finance, Abayomi Oluyomi, noted that the e-numbering will be a vital tool for improving Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) and streamlining public service delivery. “We’re taking a data-driven approach to ensure that every property is accounted for and contributes fairly to the state’s development,” he said.
Officials clarified that the numbering will not only apply to formal structures but will also cover informal settlements, ensuring inclusivity across all income brackets.
Property Owners Told to Beautify Buildings
In a parallel effort to improve the city’s aesthetics and global image, the Lagos State Government has also urged property owners to give their buildings a facelift. This directive forms part of the broader urban renewal and beautification agenda championed by the Babajide Sanwo-Olu-led administration.
Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, emphasized that many buildings across Lagos have deteriorated in appearance, contributing to visual pollution and reducing the appeal of commercial and residential neighborhoods.
“We are not just trying to collect data and taxes we want a Lagos that is clean, organized, and visually pleasing. Every property owner has a role to play,” Wahab stated.
The government hinted at potential enforcement actions for non-compliance, while also promising support for low-income homeowners through future subsidy or incentive schemes.
A United Push for Order and Aesthetics
With both initiatives the e-numbering and the call for building improvements, the Lagos State Government appears to be tightening its focus on urban order, sustainable revenue generation, and visual renewal.
Residents and property owners are encouraged to cooperate with government officials during the rollout of the e-numbering exercise and to take proactive steps in upgrading the exterior of their properties.
