In a move to ease commuting costs and promote affordable public transport, the Lagos State Government has revealed that it has spent a total of ₦14.9 billion subsidizing transport fares over the last six years.
The disclosure was made by the Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, during a ministerial press briefing held on Tuesday, April 23, 2025, in commemoration of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s second term anniversary.
According to Osiyemi, the subsidy—executed through the Lagos Bus Services Limited (LBSL)—aimed to provide Lagosians with safe, reliable, and affordable transportation, integrating road, rail, and water transport systems.
“From May 2019 to February 2025, LBSL transported over 60.8 million passengers, averaging 42,266 daily commuters across approximately 1,000 trips per day,” Osiyemi stated.
He added that the average fare charged by LBSL was ₦261.67 lower than other commercial transport fares across Lagos, contributing to the accumulated ₦14.9 billion subsidy.
As part of its safety enhancements, the government also announced the full installation of CCTV cameras on all LAGFERRY boats, ensuring real-time passenger monitoring and reinforcing commuter security on Lagos waterways.
This initiative is part of the administration’s broader commitment to integrated and inclusive transport solutions aimed at easing the burden of rising living costs, especially following fuel subsidy removals in the country.
