Lagos Govt Orders Ride-Hailing Drivers to Present Vehicles for Roadworthiness Audit
The Lagos State Government has issued a new directive requiring all drivers operating on licensed e-hailing platforms including Uber, Bolt, Lagride, and InDrive to present their vehicles for a mandatory roadworthiness audit.
Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, announced the decision after a stakeholder meeting at the Ministry of Transportation, Alausa, Ikeja. According to him, the move is aimed at improving safety standards, service quality, and ensuring regulatory compliance in the state’s ride-hailing sector.
Why the Audit Is Necessary
Osiyemi explained that the ministry has observed an increase in substandard vehicles in operation, raising safety concerns for both drivers and passengers. The audit will help identify and remove unfit vehicles from service.
“Vehicles that fail the inspection will be prohibited from operating on Lagos roads,” he stated.
New Compliance Rules for Drivers
The government outlined strict requirements for drivers to continue operations:
Vehicles must be registered with the Lagos State Government.
Drivers must be certified by the Lagos State Drivers’ Institute (LASDRI).
All rides must be booked via official in-app platforms to ensure passenger safety and traceability.
Authorities also warned against offline bookings, stressing that in-app features provide critical safety measures such as trip tracking and emergency support.
