Kunle Adesina, the Director of Public Affairs at the Lagos State Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, dismissed Uguamaye’s remarks, highlighting the irony of her complaint while actively enjoying Lagos nightlife, as seen in her TikTok videos.
Adesina argued that those who complain about Lagos’ environmental issues are often the same people contributing to them.
“They are the ones who flood Lagos daily, putting undue pressure on our infrastructure. They engage in street trading, open defecation, and littering, yet they turn around to blame the government for the challenges,” he stated.
He further defended the government’s efforts to maintain the city, adding that global organizations continue to rate Lagos positively despite criticisms.
High Cost of Living Not Exclusive to Lagos
Addressing Uguamaye’s complaint about Lagos’ high cost of living, Adesina pointed out that inflation is a global issue.
“Prices are rising everywhere, not just in Lagos. The cost of living crisis is a worldwide phenomenon,” he explained.
He also advised residents to live within their means, emphasizing that areas like Lekki and Victoria Island are not meant for everyone.
Lagos remains Nigeria’s economic hub, attracting thousands daily, but the government insists that residents must also play their part in keeping the city clean and organized.
