Traders at Ladipo Spare Parts Market in Mushin have urged the Lagos State Government to exercise leniency and reopen the market following its closure over repeated environmental violations.
The market was sealed due to persistent cases of illegal street trading and indiscriminate refuse disposal on road medians and highways around the market.
Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, confirmed the enforcement on Sunday, noting that several warnings had been issued to traders, which were allegedly ignored. “The action became unavoidable after continuous disregard for environmental regulations,” Wahab said.
The closure is part of ongoing measures by Lagos State to enforce sanitation rules across markets. Traders are appealing for a balance between justice and mercy, highlighting the economic impact of the shutdown on their livelihoods.
