The Secretary of the Labour Party National Caretaker Committee (LP NCC), Senator Darlington Nwokocha, has praised the Supreme Court’s decision to remove Julius Abure as the party’s National Chairman, calling it a victory for democracy and the rule of law.
Speaking at the Supreme Court in Abuja, Nwokocha emphasized that the verdict reaffirms Nigeria’s legal process as the ultimate authority in political disputes.
“This decision is not just a Labour Party victory but a landmark moment for Nigeria’s democracy. It proves that the judiciary remains the last hope for justice, ensuring political leadership is guided by law, not personal ambitions,” Nwokocha stated.
He further noted that the ruling brings an end to the Labour Party’s prolonged leadership crisis, allowing the party to refocus on its mission of advocating good governance and the welfare of Nigerians.
The Supreme Court’s ruling, announced on April 4, 2025, voided an earlier judgment that had recognized Abure as the Labour Party chairman. The apex court ruled that party leadership issues are internal matters and not for the courts to decide.
Nwokocha also called on all Nigerians, regardless of party affiliations, to unite in upholding justice, equity, and democratic progress.
“This ruling is a call to action for all political actors to embrace transparency, accountability, and the rule of law,” he added.
With this judgment, the Labour Party must now navigate its leadership transition, reinforcing internal democracy while maintaining its focus on national governance and reforms.
