Labour Party Faction Orders Peter Obi to Resign Within 48 Hours
A deepening rift within the Labour Party has reached a boiling point, as the Julius Abure-led faction on Thursday issued a 48-hour ultimatum to Peter Obi to resign from the party.
In a statement signed by National Publicity Secretary Obiora Ifoh, the faction accused Obi of double loyalty following his support for a new opposition coalition aimed at unseating President Bola Tinubu in 2027.
“Any of our members who is part of the coalition is given within 48 hours to formally resign his membership of the party,” Ifoh said.

Coalition Dismissed as Recycled Politicians Seeking Power
According to the statement, the Labour Party under Abure’s leadership is not part of the newly formed coalition, which it describes as an assemblage of “old, recycled, desperate and frustrated politicians.”
“The often-mouthed ‘New Nigeria is Possible’ is a ruse and cannot be achieved with this coalition,” Ifoh stated.
He added that most of the coalition members are individuals responsible for Nigeria’s mismanagement over the years and cannot drive the transformative agenda the Labour Party envisions.
Obi Accused of Lobbying Members Behind the Scenes
The LP faction also alleged that Obi has been holding “nocturnal meetings” with party members to persuade them to defect with him.
“We’re aware that some have refused to join him. Labour Party is not available for people with dual agenda,” the party said.
It warned against members operating under “deceptive personas” maintaining loyalty to Labour Party in public, while aligning with another political group in secret.
Obi Defends Coalition, Says No One Group Can Fix Nigeria Alone
Amid the backlash, Peter Obi has doubled down on his support for the coalition. In a post shared on X, he emphasized that national transformation requires collective effort.
“No one group can change Nigeria alone. To dismantle the structures that keep our people in poverty and insecurity, we must build bridges, not walls even when those bridges are uneasy,” Obi wrote.
ADC Adopted as Coalition Platform for 2027
The coalition has formally adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as its political platform for the 2027 general elections.

Obi stated that the coalition’s mission is to deliver competent, compassionate, and capable leadership that will put the welfare of Nigerians above all else.
“This decision comes from deep reflection on where we are as a country and what must be done to move forward,” he said.
