The Director General of the Labour Party’s Directorate of Mobilization and Integration, Marcel Ngogbehei, has revealed that internal disputes over campaign funds hindered the late Dr. Doyin Okupe’s efforts to stabilize the party during the 2023 presidential election.
In a heartfelt tribute, Ngogbehei described Okupe as a statesman, political strategist, and advocate for national unity, whose contributions to Nigeria’s democratic journey remain unforgettable.
Okupe, a former presidential spokesperson, passed away on March 7, 2025, at a private hospital in Lagos. He had served as the Director-General of the Labour Party’s Presidential Campaign Council during the 2023 elections.
Ngogbehei praised Okupe’s role in shaping Nigeria’s democracy, noting that he was a courageous voice of reason during crucial moments. One of his most significant contributions, according to Ngogbehei, was his role in the early days of Peter Obi’s presidential campaign and the emergence of the Obidient Movement in 2022.
Serving briefly as Obi’s interim running mate before stepping aside for a final selection, Okupe demonstrated his commitment to the cause over personal ambition. Ngogbehei highlighted how Okupe acted as a mediator amid internal conflicts that threatened the movement’s unity, preventing what he described as a power struggle within the party.
“Despite facing disrespect from some quarters, he remained composed, choosing to educate and counsel rather than retaliate,” the statement read.
Ngogbehei also recalled a personal encounter after the 2022 Labour Party/Obidient Movement Leadership Summit, where Okupe emphasized grassroots mobilization.
“That night, he personally called for me and some of our members. He wanted a database of at least 10 Obidients per polling unit in key states. He was ready to fund it because he believed in the movement,” he said. However, he lamented that internal power struggles over campaign funds led to betrayals that derailed Okupe’s efforts.
Beyond his role in the Labour Party, Okupe was a strong advocate for an inclusive Nigeria, supporting the Southeast’s quest for the presidency and firmly standing by Peter Obi, whom he saw as the most competent candidate.
A mentor to young politicians, Okupe was passionate about youth empowerment and consistently encouraged young Nigerians to take an active role in governance. His belief in the youth’s potential earned him widespread respect across political lines.
During the 2023 elections, Okupe remained a firm advocate for justice and fairness, rejecting tribal politics and calling for national unity. His steadfastness in the face of opposition solidified his legacy as a leader who prioritized national interest over personal or political gain.
“As we say our final goodbyes, we celebrate a life dedicated to service, leadership, and the relentless pursuit of a better Nigeria. His voice may be gone, but his impact will continue to inspire generations,” Ngogbehei concluded.
