A group of constituents from Kogi Central Senatorial District has declared their intention to recall Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, citing concerns over her representation and alleged controversies.
The declaration was made by the Kogi Central Elites Forum (KCEF) in a statement jointly signed by its President, Ibrahim Abdulazeez Ibrahim, and Secretary, Akerejola Johnson, in Lokoja.
Representing the Ebira ethnic group, the forum stated that the move was necessary due to what they described as the senator’s actions causing international embarrassment to the district.
Community Support for the Recall Effort
Dismissing claims that the recall process lacked majority support, the group asserted that the initiative was widely backed by the electorate.
“No one is behind this recall—it is a collective decision. Ebira people are known for their resolve, and we cannot be deceived,” the statement read.
They also refuted suggestions that the recall process was politically motivated, emphasizing that even former supporters of the senator had withdrawn their backing.
Clarification on INEC’s Role
Addressing the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) stance, the forum clarified that the commission’s involvement would only come after the petitioners gathered the required signatures for verification.
“INEC has no role at this stage; it is our responsibility to meet the threshold before submitting it for verification,” they stated.
Allegations and Senate Dispute
The controversy surrounding Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan intensified following allegations of sexual harassment against Senate President Godswill Akpabio—a claim that emerged after she reportedly failed to comply with Senate seating protocols.
The constituents argued that the senator’s actions violated the norms of legislative conduct and brought unnecessary controversy to the district.
“As Ebira people, we do not tolerate intimidation, but in this case, she disrespected the Senate’s rules and introduced narratives unfamiliar to its history,” they added.
