Kogi Boat Tragedy: 36 Dead, Dozens Rescued in Ibaji Mishap
Death Toll Rises in Ibaji Boat Accident
The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has confirmed that 36 people have now died in the boat mishap that occurred in Ibaji Local Government Area of Kogi State.
The wooden boat, carrying about 80 passengers, capsized on Tuesday afternoon while conveying traders, women, children, and mourners across the river from Akpu and Odumomo communities in Ibaji.
Rescue Efforts and Survivors
According to NIWA’s Head of Idah Station, Williams Isaac, at least 40 passengers were rescued with the help of local divers and emergency teams.
However, more victims are feared missing, and search and recovery operations are still ongoing.
Victims and Circumstances
Most of the victims were residents of Onugwa and other riverine communities in Ibaji. Many of the passengers were returning from a burial ceremony when the boat capsized.
Reports suggest overloading and possible collision with submerged objects may have contributed to the disaster.
Official Reactions
Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo of Kogi State has directed emergency agencies to intensify rescue efforts and commiserated with the bereaved families.
President Bola Tinubu expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy and urged stricter safety compliance by boat operators across Nigeria’s waterways.
NIWA further assured that it is working with community leaders and divers to provide support to the affected families.
