Keneth Okonkwo Backs Atiku Abubakar as Best Bet Against APC in 2027
Former spokesperson for Labour Party’s 2023 presidential campaign, Keneth Okonkwo, has thrown his weight behind Atiku Abubakar as a suitable contender to unseat President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections.
Okonkwo made the statement during an appearance on Channels Television, expressing concern that the volatile nature of Nigeria’s political terrain could overwhelm a younger or less experienced presidential aspirant.
“Younger Candidates Will Be Swallowed by Political Sharks”
Okonkwo, a lawyer and veteran actor, argued that the current political structure is rigged against emerging politicians.
“Any officer of the middle or lower cadre never succeeded in Nigeria and there is a reason for that,” he said. “What Nigeria needs is a man of conscience who is experienced, who might even be from the old cadre that has made up his mind that he wants a new Nigeria.”
He warned that even internationally respected figures like Barack Obama wouldn’t stand a chance in Nigeria’s electoral process.
“Obama can come to Nigeria and will not win the election. Not because people will not vote for him, but they will steal it from him,” he added.
Atiku Abubakar as a Symbol of Stability
Citing the former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Okonkwo said he represents an example of the kind of leadership that could restore order, referencing his time in office under President Olusegun Obasanjo.
“Assuming Atiku comes into power and takes us back to the Obasanjo years he would have been a hero. He would have paid up all our debts, acquired no new ones, and ensured improved national security,” Okonkwo stated.
He emphasized Atiku’s unique position as the only candidate who has been in the presidency since Nigeria’s return to democracy in 1999.
Coalition or Old Wine in New Bottles?
When asked whether a coalition comprising members of the PDP and APC parties Okonkwo previously criticized can bring about genuine change, he remained cautious but hopeful.
“Let’s look at it this way: even if it’s someone like Atiku from the old order, if he’s willing to reset Nigeria and challenge the rot in the system, he can still be a hero,” he said.
