Kano University Closes Female Hostels Over ‘Immorality’ and Safety Concerns
Background of Repeated Incidents
The Kano University of Science and Technology (KUST), Wudil, has once again come under scrutiny following its decision to shut down sections of its female hostels over alleged immoral behaviour, hygiene violations, and safety threats.
University authorities cited persistent concerns ranging from indecent conduct within hostel premises to public health infractions such as open defecation and communal bathing, which allegedly threatened the wellbeing of students.
Hygiene Violations Trigger Lockout
In January 2024, dozens of students were locked out of Block E of the female hostel. The university accused the occupants of poor sanitary practices. The Dean of Student Affairs enforced a fine of ₦3,000 per student before they could return to their rooms, arguing the measure was necessary to restore cleanliness and discipline within the residential halls.
History of Safety Hazards
Back in 2019, a major fire incident destroyed over 30 rooms in the Dangote Female Hostel, along with several toilets and kitchens. While no students were harmed due to an ongoing ASUU strike, the fire, blamed on faulty electrical wiring, exposed serious lapses in infrastructure safety.
Despite this, the hostel remained unrepaired for years. In 2021, KUST’s chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) accused management of prioritizing luxury over student welfare. The university allegedly borrowed ₦200 million to purchase luxury vehicles instead of rebuilding the destroyed hostel blocks.
Security Breaches Add to Concerns
Further worsening the situation, a man disguised as a woman was caught trying to sneak into a female hostel at Skyline University in Kano in March 2024. He was reportedly found with charms hidden on his body, raising fears about potential security breaches at female student accommodations.
Though this occurred at a different institution, the incident amplified calls for stricter security across all universities in Kano State, especially female hostels.
