The Kano State Police Command has arrested a 25-year-old man, Ididiong James, for allegedly attacking his mother and illegally possessing a firearm and ammunition in the state.
The suspect was arrested after police operatives attached to the Panshekara Division responded to a distress call on January 25 over violent activities at a residence in Panshekara Quarters, Kano.
According to a statement issued on Wednesday by the command’s Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, officers arrived at the scene to find the suspect allegedly beating his mother.
The statement said the suspect fled on sighting the police, but his mother handed over an English Beretta pistol and eight rounds of ammunition, which she said she discovered inside her son’s bag.
“She refused to give them to him, which led to the violent attack,” the police said.
The woman also raised concerns about her son’s behaviour, noting that he had changed significantly since returning from a New Year celebration, prompting fears about his activities.
Police later tracked down and arrested the suspect, who is currently in custody as investigations continue.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, PhD, commended the woman for her courage and urged parents to remain vigilant and report suspicious behaviour early to prevent crime and violence.
