The Kano Emirate crisis took a new turn yesterday as the Deputy Governor of Kano State, Comrade Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo, called on President Bola Tinubu to remove the 15th Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, from the state.
Gwarzo made the appeal while addressing party loyalists at the Coronation Hall, Government House, criticizing the police command in Kano for dispersing aggrieved youths who had staged a protest on Wednesday against Bayero’s continued stay at the Nassarawa mini palace.
Deputy Governor Accuses Security Forces of Oppression
Expressing frustration over the situation, Gwarzo accused security operatives of enabling Bayero’s presence in the state despite a court ruling affirming his dethronement. He warned against any attempt to undermine democracy in Kano, citing the heavy deployment of police and military personnel across the metropolis.
“We are calling on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to come and remove the emir he installed and kept in a graveyard. The people of Kano, especially the youth, are tired of this nonsense,” he declared.
He also condemned the police for allegedly using force against peaceful protesters, accusing them of firing teargas and live ammunition at demonstrators.
“It is shocking that in a democratic setting, the police are attacking peaceful protesters. On Wednesday, they confronted the youths and fired teargas at them. We even heard that live ammunition was used to disperse them,” Gwarzo alleged.
The deputy governor further revealed that military vehicles were deployed across the city, with some even stationed outside his residence, but insisted that the state government remains undeterred.
“They brought military vehicles to intimidate us, but we are not shaken. This is a democracy, and democracy must prevail. We will not back down, and we stand fully behind the youth who are expressing their grievances,” he affirmed.
Police Issue Fresh Warning Against Protests
Amid the escalating tension, the Kano State Police Command raised an alert over a potential violent protest, warning that any group attempting to cause unrest would face severe consequences.
While the identity and mission of the group were not disclosed, the police confirmed that 17 individuals had already been arrested in connection with the unrest.
The situation in Kano remains volatile as the struggle over the emirship continues to divide the state and raise security concerns.
