IPOB Declares May 30 Sit-at-Home Across Southeast
The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has announced a mandatory sit-at-home across the South-East region on Friday, May 30, 2025, to mark its annual Biafra Heroes Memorial Day. The group issued a directive urging residents to remain indoors from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., with all markets, schools, and businesses expected to shut down.
IPOB stated that the action is in honour of those who died during the Nigerian Civil War and in the ongoing struggle for Biafran independence.
WAEC Exams Threatened by Sit-at-Home Order
The sit-at-home order coincides with ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examinations (WASSCE). There are growing fears that students scheduled to write their exams on May 30 may be unable to reach their centres due to safety concerns and movement restrictions.
In past years, such as in 2024, students in Anambra were forced to disguise themselves as water-fetchers to beat IPOB’s restrictions. Despite assurances from state governments and security agencies, many parents remain concerned about the safety of their children.
