Jury selection has officially begun in the federal sex trafficking and racketeering trial of music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs in New York, kicking off what is expected to be a dramatic and closely watched court case.
Combs faces multiple serious charges, including sex trafficking, racketeering conspiracy, and transportation for prostitution. If convicted, he could face a minimum sentence of 15 years, with the possibility of life imprisonment.
According to prosecutors, Combs allegedly operated a criminal network using his Bad Boy Records empire as a front. The accusations involve so-called “Freak-Offs” parties where participants were reportedly coerced into drug-fueled sexual encounters, sometimes in exchange for career favors or financial rewards. Many of the alleged acts were non-consensual.
A key piece of evidence expected to be presented is surveillance footage from a 2016 incident, which reportedly shows Combs physically assaulting his ex-girlfriend Cassie a clip that went viral and reignited public interest in past abuse allegations.
The trial, overseen by Judge Arun Subramanian, began with over 600 potential jurors being vetted through detailed questionnaires. The goal is to select 12 jurors and six alternates. So far, there’s been little visible reaction to Combs’ courtroom presence, indicating that pre-screening may have filtered out those strongly biased by his celebrity status.
Despite pleading not guilty and maintaining that all sexual encounters were consensual, Combs remains in custody at the Brooklyn Metropolitan Detention Center. He was denied bail over concerns that he might attempt to intimidate witnesses.
Combs’ legal team, including high-profile defense attorney Brian Steel who also represents rapper Young Thug is challenging the admissibility of some evidence, particularly the surveillance video.
Opening statements are expected to begin on May 12, with the trial anticipated to run for at least eight weeks.
