Julius Maada Bio Elected ECOWAS Chairman, Succeeding Nigeria’s Tinubu

Leadership Transition in West Africa

Sierra Leone’s President, Dr. Julius Maada Bio, has officially assumed the role of Chairperson of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Authority of Heads of State and Government. The leadership baton was passed on Sunday by Nigeria’s President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, marking the end of his eventful two-year tenure.

The handover was confirmed in a statement by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to President Tinubu on Information and Strategy, who announced that “Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio is the new chairman of ECOWAS.”

Tinubu’s Tenure: A Period of Crisis Management

President Tinubu’s time at the helm of ECOWAS was defined by major regional challenges, including a wave of military coups, increasing political instability, and deepening economic hardships across member states. His leadership also saw strained relations with the Alliance of Sahelian States comprising Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger which pulled out of ECOWAS following their respective military takeovers.

Despite these challenges, Tinubu initiated diplomatic outreach, dispatching envoys such as Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu and Ambassador Sola Enikanolaiye to strengthen regional ties.

Economic Integration Takes Center Stage

One of Tinubu’s final acts as ECOWAS chairman was the successful hosting of the inaugural West Africa Economic Summit (WAES) in Abuja. Held at the newly renovated Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre, the two-day event was designed to boost regional trade and investment cooperation.

The summit preceded the 67th Ordinary Session of ECOWAS Heads of State and Government, which also took place in Abuja, gathering leaders from Ghana, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Senegal, The Gambia, Benin, Togo, and Guinea-Bissau. Representatives from key institutions such as WAMA, WAMI, EBID, UEMOA, and the AfCFTA Secretariat also attended.

“The Economic Summit is expected to yield concrete outcomes and deliverables to fast-track West Africa’s integration agenda as a critical foundation for sustainable peace, security, and prosperity,” said the official statement.

Bio’s Vision: Harnessing Regional Potential

In his goodwill message at the summit, President Bio stressed the importance of leveraging West Africa’s abundant natural resources and youthful population. He called for “decisive actions” to accelerate integration, especially in light of the region’s mounting debt, food insecurity, and climate vulnerability.

“As leaders facing global economic competition, we must take decisive actions to accelerate regional integration programmes vital for economic growth and shared prosperity,” he stated.
