Jigawa PDP Vows to Defeat Governor Namadi in 2027
Opposition Cites Historical Election Upsets as Grounds for Optimism
The Jigawa State chapter of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has declared its intention to unseat Governor Umar Namadi in the 2027 governorship election.
The declaration was made by Umar Danjani, the Deputy Chairman of the PDP in Jigawa, through a post on his official Facebook page on Sunday.
Governor Namadi of the All Progressives Congress (APC) was elected in 2023 with 618,449 votes, defeating PDP candidate Mustapha Sule Lamido, who polled 368,726 votes. Namadi assumed office on May 29, 2023.
PDP Highlights Past Victories as Evidence of Possible Turnaround
Danjani Lists Cases Where Opposition Defeated Incumbents
In his statement, Danjani drew attention to several instances where opposition parties triumphed over ruling parties, even when the incumbent president belonged to the defeated party.
“In 2019, Governor Fintiri of the PDP defeated APC’s Jibrilla Bindow. In 2015, Abdulaziz Yari won despite a PDP-led presidency. These precedents give us confidence,” he noted.
He also cited:
Governor Bala Mohammed’s win in Bauchi State in 2019.
Governor Seyi Makinde’s victory in Oyo State in the same year.
Governor Ademola Adeleke’s triumph in Osun State in 2022 over then-incumbent APC governor Gboyega Oyetola.
Malam Ibrahim Shekarau’s 2003 win against PDP’s Rabiu Kwankwaso under a PDP-led federal government.
Danjani concluded with a prayer, saying:
“May Allah increase our victory.”

Party Chairman Gumel Says Namadi’s Leadership Has Transformed Jigawa
Reacting to the PDP’s challenge, Jigawa State APC Chairman Aminu Gumel dismissed the opposition’s optimism as “unrealistic” and “based on wishful thinking.”
Speaking to thewatch.ng via telephone, Gumel defended Governor Namadi’s record, stating that his administration has delivered meaningful development across the state.
“Jigawa is in good hands. Governor Namadi has brought about significant positive change. The people trust him and the APC,” he said.
Gumel also emphasized:
Widespread grassroots support for the APC.
Tangible results from Namadi’s policies and programs.
Continued confidence in the governor’s leadership heading into 2027.
“We are confident in our ability to secure another victory. The APC-led government has met the needs and aspirations of the people,” Gumel added.
