The Jigawa State Police Command has arrested a 20-year-old groom, Auwal Abdulwahab, and three of his friends for allegedly coercing his bride into non-consensual sexual activity, leading to her death just days after their wedding.
Police spokesman, SP Lawan Shiisu Adam, confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Monday. He disclosed that the tragedy occurred on April 26, 2025, at about 10:00 PM in Tungo village, Albasu District of Sule Tankarkar Local Government Area.
According to preliminary investigations, the bride had reportedly resisted marital relations since the wedding. In response, Abdulwahab allegedly conspired with his friends — Nura Basiru, Muttaka Lawan, and Hamisu Musa — to forcefully engage her in sexual activity inside their matrimonial home.
During the incident, the bride reportedly raised an alarm but tragically died during the assault.
Upon receiving the distress call, a team of officers led by the Divisional Police Officer swiftly arrived at the scene. The victim’s body was taken to Gumel General Hospital, where a medical examination confirmed her death. Her remains were subsequently released to her family for burial.
All four suspects have been apprehended and are currently in police custody.
The Commissioner of Police, Jigawa State Command, CP AT Abdullahi, has ordered the immediate transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Dutse for further discreet investigation.
Upon conclusion of investigations, the suspects will face prosecution under charges of criminal conspiracy and culpable homicide, among other offenses.
The police command urged the public to remain calm, assuring that justice would be served.
