The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has reiterated its dedication to promoting gender equality within the Commission and enhancing women’s participation in Nigeria’s electoral system.
In a statement signed by the Director of Voter Education and Publicity, Mrs. Victoria Eta-Messi, INEC praised the vital contributions of women in shaping both society and the electoral landscape. The Commission emphasized the importance of this year’s International Women’s Day theme, “Accelerate Action,” highlighting that gender equality is not just about fairness but is essential for a stronger democracy.
“A gender-balanced leadership, where women are equally represented in decision-making, fosters more inclusive and responsive governance,” Mrs. Eta-Messi stated, stressing that the future of Nigeria’s democracy hinges on women’s full participation.
INEC also showcased its progress in advancing female representation within the Commission. Currently, two women serve as National Commissioners, while the Secretary of the Commission is also female. Additionally, four Resident Electoral Commissioners and 12 out of 37 Administrative Secretaries (32.4%) are women. Notably, women now hold 42.3% of INEC’s 26 director positions, reflecting a significant increase in female leadership roles.
Despite these achievements, INEC acknowledged that gender equality remains a work in progress. Mrs. Eta-Messi underscored the need for policies addressing barriers such as societal expectations, lack of support systems, and gender-based violence.
“The Commission is committed to ensuring equal representation at all levels of the electoral process,” she affirmed. “We are actively working on policies to encourage greater participation of women—whether as candidates, voters, election administrators, or party representatives.”
As INEC marks International Women’s Day, it reaffirms its dedication to breaking societal and structural barriers limiting women’s involvement in politics. The statement concluded with a powerful call to action:
“When women are empowered to lead and given equal opportunities, our democracy thrives. Governance becomes more inclusive, and Nigeria’s future shines brighter for all.”
INEC encourages all Nigerians—both men and women—to support gender equality, not just in elections, but in every sphere of life.
