INEC, Presidency Debunk Reports of Mahmood Yakubu’s Sack

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Presidency have debunked viral social media reports claiming that INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, has been sacked by President Bola Tinubu.

The false claim, which circulated via WhatsApp and other platforms, alleged that Yakubu had been replaced by one Professor Bashiru Olamilekan.

Reacting to the rumour, the Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, Mr. Rotimi Oyekanmi, dismissed the claim, stating simply: “Please, disregard. It is not true.”

Similarly, the Presidency through O’tega Ogra, Senior Special Adviser to the President on Digital and New Media, described the report as fake news. He noted that any formal announcement on such matters would come from the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) or another authorised source.

Professor Yakubu, currently serving his second term as INEC Chairman, is expected to complete his tenure toward the end of the year.

The public has been urged to disregard the misinformation and rely only on credible sources for verified updates.
