Fubara, Deputy Make First Public Appearance Since Impeachment Move
Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Nma Odu, on Sunday made their first public appearance since the State House of Assembly initiated impeachment proceedings against them.
The governor and his deputy were sighted at a church service held to mark the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day at St. Cyprian’s Anglican Church, Port Harcourt, putting an end to days of public silence that followed the impeachment notice.
Silence, Travel, and Rising Political Tension
Following the impeachment move by lawmakers, both the governor and his deputy had stayed away from public engagements. Sources confirmed that during the period, they travelled outside the country for official engagements.
Their absence fuelled speculation as political tension continued to build in the state, with the Assembly accusing the governor and his deputy of gross misconduct. Neither Fubara nor Odu had publicly responded to the allegations before Sunday’s appearance.
Church Service Held Amid Political Uncertainty
The Armed Forces Remembrance Day service was organised to honour Nigerian servicemen and women who lost their lives defending the country’s unity and sovereignty. Prayers were also offered for personnel currently serving across the nation.
Despite the solemn nature of the event, the political undertone surrounding the governor’s presence was unmistakable, as it marked his first public outing since the impeachment process began.
Fubara Calls for Calm, Cites Faith
Addressing the congregation briefly, Governor Fubara urged residents of Rivers State to remain calm amid the unfolding political situation.
He said his decision to remain silent in the face of what he described as distractions was deliberate, stressing that his strength comes from his faith in God.
Recalling remarks he made earlier at the New Year banquet held at Government House, Fubara said:
“I said something that dogs bark when they do not understand. Now, see, a lot of you don’t understand, and that’s the reason why I don’t shout, I don’t complain.
“I know what I have. I know that I have what is supreme, and that is God. So, I want everyone to be relaxed. What is important is peace for this dear state, and we’ll get it by the special name of God.”
Deputy Governor Appeals for Good Conduct, Prayers
In her remarks, Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu thanked worshippers for turning out for the service and urged residents to conduct themselves responsibly during the ongoing political tension.
She referenced the sermon delivered by the Dean of the Anglican Communion, Archbishop Blessing Eyinda, who reminded the congregation that every action would one day be remembered.

Odu also appealed to Rivers people to continue praying for the administration, describing such spiritual support as the pillar sustaining the government.
Third Impeachment Attempt in Less Than Three Years
Sunday’s appearance comes against the backdrop of what is now the third impeachment attempt against Governor Fubara in less than three years, further deepening the political crisis in the oil-rich state.
As of the time of this report, the governor and his deputy have not issued any formal statement addressing the specific allegations raised by the State House of Assembly.
